What is editing and how does it differ from proofreading?
Editing involves carefully examining written content to ensure that ideas are expressed as eloquently as possible in order to engage and maintain a reader’s attention. It’s an integral part of the process of developing any written content, from a website landing page to a best-selling novel.
Proofreading is the final stage of the editing process, which involves checking for spelling, punctuation and grammatical mistakes.
What is the editing process?
A good editor will start by reading an article or report several times before making any changes. They will want to know the purpose and context of the work – for example, will it be published as a blog on a website or on social media platforms? Who is the intended audience? Is the intent to raise awareness of a business or of a particular product?
The editor will examine the content sentence by sentence to ensure that the narrative flows well and encourages the reader to continue reading, suggesting changes that improve clarity and readability.
Why should you hire an editor?
A second pair of eyes is always valuable. However, an accomplished editor will do much more than ensure there are no mistakes; they will ensure your words powerfully resonate with your target audience and help you to accomplish your goals.
